Sardar Vallabbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat (SVNIT Surat) was established in the year 1961 as one of the 17 Regional Engineering Technology colleges (RECs) of the country. A joint venture between the Central Government and the government of Gujarat. It was established with facilities to run Bachelor's Degree Programmes in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering disciplines. It is now changed to National Institute of Technology along with other RECs. SVNIT, Surat is located in the outskirts of Surat city in an area known as Ichchhanath, at a distance of about 10 kms from the Surat Railway Station.
