Ramaswamy Venkataraman born on December 4, 1910 in the village of Rajamadam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, Shri Venkataraman married Smt Janaki Venkataraman in the year 1938. Educated locally and in the city of Madras, Shri Venkataraman obtained his Master Degree in Economics from Madras University. He later qualified in Law from the Law College, Madras.
He participated in the Quit India Movember of 1942 and was jailed for 2 years. He was a well known labour leader. Between 1957 and 1967 he served as Minister for Industries, Labour, Co-operation, Power, Transport and Commerical Taxes in the
Madras State Government. From 1967 to 1971 he was a Member of the Planning
commission. In 1980, Shri Venkataraman was re-elected to the Lok Sabha and was appointed Union Minister of Finance in the Government headed by Smt Indira Gandhi. He was later appointed Union Minister of Defence. R.Venkataraman was elected Vice-President of India in August 1984. He was elected the 8th President of India in July 25, 1987 and held office till July 25, 1992.
