Varahagiri Venkata Giri (1894 - 1980), was the fourth president of the Republic of India (1969–74). He was born on 10 August, 1894 at Berhampore in Ganjam district at that time in the Madras Presidency and now in Orissa. Giri began his education at Khallikote College, Berhampore, and then went to Dublin to study law. There he became engaged in the Sinn Fein Movement and was expelled from Ireland in 1916. Upon his return to India, he joined the nascent labour movement. He became general secretary and then president of the All-India Railwaymen's Federation and was twice president of the All-India Trade Union Congress, an organization closely linked with the Congress Party.

After independence he served as high commissioner in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka, 1947–1951). He served successfully as governor of Uttar Pradesh (1957-1960), Kerala (1960-1965) and Mysore (1965-1967).He was elected as Vice-President of India in 1967. Giri became acting president of India in 1969. In 1969 he became acting president and later in the year, as a supporter of Indira Gandhi, was elected to a five-year term. He received India's highest civilian decoration, the Bharat Ratna, in 1975.
