Kocheril Raman Narayanan was born on 4 February 1921 at Uzhavoor, Kerala and died on 9 November 2005 at New Delhi, India also known as K. R. Narayanan, was the tenth President of the Republic of India. He is the only Dalit and the only Malayali to have held the Presidency.

K.R Narayanan received his education from the University of Travancore where he obtained an M.A. degree in English Literature standing first in the University. Later, he obtained B.Sc (Econ.) degree from the London School of Economics with First Class Honours specialising in Political Science.

K.R Narayanan started his career as a Lecturer in the University of Travancore (1943). Later he took to journalism and worked with The Hindu, Madras and Times of India, Bombay (1944-45). While a student in London, he served as the London Correspondent of "Social Welfare", a weekly from Bombay edited by Shri K.M. Munshi (1945-48). K.R Narayanan joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1949 and served in Indian Embassies in Rangoon, Tokyo, London, Canberra and Hanoi and held different positions in the Ministry of External Affairs. Narayanan also served as India's Ambassador toThailand (1967-69), Turkey (1973-75), the People's Republic of China (1976-78) and Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs (1976).

After completing his term as Indian Ambassador to USA (1980-84), Narayanan entered politics and won three successive General Elections in 1984,1989 and 1991 from his Parliament Constituency of Ottapalam in Kerala. He was Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from 1985 to 1992. During this period he was Union Minister of State for Planning (1985), External Affairs (1985-86) and Science and Technology, Atomic Energy, Space, Electronics and Ocean Development and Vice-President, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (1986-89).

K.R Narayanan was elected Vice-President of India and served in this position from 21st August, 1992 till he assumed the office of the President of India in July 1997.

Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma was born on August 19, 1918 at Bhopal,Madhya Pradesh and died on December 26, 1999 at New Delhi.He was the 9th President of republic of India serving from 1992 to 1997. Sharma served as Vice-President until 1992, when he was elected President. He was also Chief Minister of the erstwhile Bhopal State (1952-1956). Cabinet Minister, Government of Madhya Pradesh, holding the portfolios of Education, Law, Public Works, Industry and Commerce, National Resources and Separate Revenue (1956-1967). Dr. Sharma was the President of the Indian National Congress in 1972-1974. He served cabinet as the minister for Communication from 1974-77. In 1984 he began serving as a governor of Indian states, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.

Dr. Sharma received his education at St. John's College, Agra, Allahabad University, Lucknow University, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University, Lincoln's Inn and Harvard Law School. He took his M.A. Degrees in English Literature, Hindi and Sanskrit standing first in the University. He obtained his LL.M. from Lucknow University once again standing first in the University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Law at Cambridge. Dr. Sharma was awarded the Chakravarti Gold Medal for Social Service by Lucknow University.

Ramaswamy Venkataraman born on December 4, 1910 in the village of Rajamadam, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, Shri Venkataraman married Smt Janaki Venkataraman in the year 1938. Educated locally and in the city of Madras, Shri Venkataraman obtained his Master Degree in Economics from Madras University. He later qualified in Law from the Law College, Madras.

He participated in the Quit India Movember of 1942 and was jailed for 2 years. He was a well known labour leader. Between 1957 and 1967 he served as Minister for Industries, Labour, Co-operation, Power, Transport and Commerical Taxes in the
Madras State Government. From 1967 to 1971 he was a Member of the Planning
commission. In 1980, Shri Venkataraman was re-elected to the Lok Sabha and was appointed Union Minister of Finance in the Government headed by Smt Indira Gandhi. He was later appointed Union Minister of Defence. R.Venkataraman was elected Vice-President of India in August 1984. He was elected the 8th President of India in July 25, 1987 and held office till July 25, 1992.

Giani Zail Singh was born in Punjab on May 5, 1916. He was an Indian politician and member of the Congress Party. In March 1972, he became the chief Minister of Punjab. In 1980, Giani Zail Singh became Union Home Minister. In 1982, he was elected as the the seventh President of India, and the first Sikh to hold India`s highest public office and honour, and held office till July 25, 1987. Giani Zail Singh died in December 25, 1994.

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was born on May 18, 1913 in Elluru in Ananthapur district, Andhra Pradesh. He was the sixth President of India of the republic of India serving from 25 July, 1977 to 25 July, 1982.

He was elected to the Madras Legislaltive Assembly in 1946 and became the Secretary of the Madras Congress Legislature Party. In 1947, he became a Member of the Indian Constituent Assembly. He was Minister for Prohibition, Housing and Forests in the composite state of Madras from 1949 to 1951. He was Elected as President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee in 1951. In 1952, he was elected as a Member of the Rajya Sabha. He served as the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in October 1956 and again from 1962 to 1964. He also served as President of the Indian National Congress from 1959 to 1962. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in November, 1964.

He was also Union Minister of Transport, Civil Aviation, Shipping and Tourism from January 1966 to March 1967 in the Cabinet. He was Elected to the Lok Sabha from Hindupur constituency in Andhra Pradesh. He was elected Speaker of Lok Sabha on March 17, 1967, where he won unprecedented acclaim and admiration.

In March 1977, he fought the Lok Sabha election from Nandyal constituency in Andhra Pradesh as a Janata Party candidate.He was the only non-Congress candidate to get elected from Andhra Pradesh. He was unanimously elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha on March 26, 1977. He was elected President by the electoral college in July 1977, and was the only person to be elected President of India unopposed. Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy passed away in 1996.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was born on May 13 1905. He was sworn in as President of India on August 24, 1974 and held that office till his death on 11th February, 1977. He was educated at St. Stephen`s College and St Catharine`s College, Cambridge, and subsequently became an active member of the Congress Party. He was chosen for the presidency by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974, becoming the third Muslim President in Delhi. He would later use his constitutional authority as head of state to allow her to rule by decree once emergency rule was proclaimed in 1975.

A National Law University has been established in his name at Raipur.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri (1894 - 1980), was the fourth president of the Republic of India (1969–74). He was born on 10 August, 1894 at Berhampore in Ganjam district at that time in the Madras Presidency and now in Orissa. Giri began his education at Khallikote College, Berhampore, and then went to Dublin to study law. There he became engaged in the Sinn Fein Movement and was expelled from Ireland in 1916. Upon his return to India, he joined the nascent labour movement. He became general secretary and then president of the All-India Railwaymen's Federation and was twice president of the All-India Trade Union Congress, an organization closely linked with the Congress Party.

After independence he served as high commissioner in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka, 1947–1951). He served successfully as governor of Uttar Pradesh (1957-1960), Kerala (1960-1965) and Mysore (1965-1967).He was elected as Vice-President of India in 1967. Giri became acting president of India in 1969. In 1969 he became acting president and later in the year, as a supporter of Indira Gandhi, was elected to a five-year term. He received India's highest civilian decoration, the Bharat Ratna, in 1975.

Abbas Tyabji was an Indian freedom fighter from Gujarat, who had served as the Chief Justice of the (Baroda) Gujarat High Court. He was a key ally and supporter of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel during the 1918 Kheda Satyagraha, and the 1928 Bardoli Satyagraha. He was also a close supporter of Mohandas Gandhi and the Indian National Congress. In 1919-20, Abbas Tyabji was one of the members of the Committee appointed by the Indian National Congress to review the charges against General Reginald Dyer for the Amritsar Massacre, which occurred during the fight for independence from the British. Tyabji became the national leader after leading major protests against the arrest of Mohandas Gandhi in May 1930. He died in Mussoorie (now in Uttarakhand) on June 9, 1936.

Peel oranges, remove the inner skin,pith and seeds.Boil in water until well cooked (10 minutes). Cool and crush the orange. Strain through the muslin. Pour the liquid into the brewing vessel and sprinkle dry yeast on top. Secure the mouth with 2 layers of cloth and keep in warm place. After 14 days ,decant the clear solution into clean bottles and store. Use only after 2 months.

Coriander Squares


Snacks Recipes - Coriander Squares
Maharashtrian snack, good to relish with a cup of hot tea.


INGREDIENTS :

2 cup of coriander leaves, chopped
11/2 besan (gram-flour)
1/2 cup atta (wheat flour)
2 tbsp sesame seeds
2 green chillies, finely chopped
1/2 cup peanuts - roasted and coarsely pounded
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1/4 tsp sodium bi-carbonate (cooking soda)
1 tsp sugar
oil
salt to taste


METHOD

Mix besan and atta. Add sesame seeds, coriander leaves, green chillies, peanut powder, turmeric powder, chilli powder, garam masala powder, soda bicarb, salt and sugar. Add water and make a thick batter (paste). Heat 2 tbsp of oil and add to the mixture.
Grease a tray and place the batter (paste) evenly. Steam cook fo 15 minutes. Let it cool. Then cut into small squares. Deep-fry the squares in hot oil. Best served with green coriander and chilli chutney.
