Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) Indian philosopher and statesman. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). His birthday is celebrated in India as Teacher's Day. Radhakrishnan was born near Madras into a Brahmin family of orthodox Hindu persuasion. His mother tongue was Telugu. His early years were spent in Tiruttani, Tiruvallur and Tirupati. His primary education was in Gowdie School, Tiruvallur, and higher school education in P.M.High School, Gajulamandyam, Renigunta. He married Sivakamuamma in 1904 at age 16 in Vellore. He graduated with a Master's degree in Philosophy from the prestigious Madras Christian College.

The main part of his life was spent as an academic, he was a philosophy professor at Mysore (1918–21) and Calcutta (1921–31, 1937–41) universities and also held a professorship in eastern religion and ethics at Oxford (1936–52). His positions in academic administration included the vice chancellorship of Andhra Univ. (1931–36) and of Benares Hindu Univ. (1939–48) and the chancellorship of Delhi Univ. (1953–62). He was ambassador to the USSR (1949–52).

Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902 – 1987) was the sixth Prime Minister of the Republic of India, serving from 28 July 1979 until 14 January 1980.Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902 to Meer Singh and Netra Kaur at Noorpur village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. After completing graduation in science and masters in arts from Agra he did his LLB and started practicing as a civil lawyer at Ghaziabad.

Charan Singh joined the Indian National Congress in 1929 and took active part in the Freedom Movement. He remained in the party till 1967. He was elected leader of the Sanyukta Vidhayak Dal (SVD) and became the Chief Minister of coalition Government in 1967-68, which lasted less than a year. He became the Chief Minister of another coalition government of Uttar Pradesh in 1970, once again for a brief spell of 6 months.

He was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha in 1977 and was the Home Minister in Morarji’s cabinet. In 1979 Charan Singh took over as the Prime Minister of India for less than a month. He passed away on May 29, 1987.

Morarji Ranchhodji Desai (1896 – 1995) was an Indian freedom fighter and 5th Prime Minister of India.He was the first Prime Minister that did not belong to the Indian Congress Party. He is the only Indian to receive the highest civilian awards from both India and Pakistan, namely the Bharat Ratna and Nishaan-e-Pakistan.

Shri Morarji Desai was born on February 29, 1896 in Bhadeli village, now in the Bulsar district of Gujarat. Desai was educated at Wilson College, Bombay where he obtained a B.Sc. in 1916. In 1918 he qualified for the Bombay Civil Service. He resigned from the civil service in 1930. He joined Mohandas K. Gandhi's struggle in 1930 and spent almost 10 years in British jails in the 1930s and 40s.

In 1969 he became chairman of the opposition to Indira Gandhi. He was arrested and detained on June 26, 1975, when Emergency was declared. He was kept in solitary confinement and was released on January 18, 1977, a little before the decision to hold elections to the Lok Sabha was announced. He campaigned vigorously throughout the length and breadth of the country and was largely instrumental in achieving the re-sounding victory of the Janata Party in the General Elections held in March, 1977 for the Sixth Lok Sabha. Shri Desai was himself selected to the Lok Sabha from the Surat Constituency in Gujarat. He was later unanimously elected as Leader of the Janata Party in Parliament and was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India on March 24, 1977.

Gulzari Lal Nanda was born on July 4, 1898, in Sialkot (Punjab) was an Indian politician. He was educated at Lahore, Agra and Allahabad. He worked as a research scholar on labour problems at the University of Allahabad (1920-1921) and became Professor of Economics at the National College, Bombay in 1921. He joined the Non-Cooperation Movement the same year. In 1922, he become Secretary of the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association in which he worked until 1946. He was imprisoned for Satyagraha in 1932, and again from 1942 to 1944. He was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly in 1937 and was Parliamentary Secretary (Labour and Excise) to the Government of Bombay from 1937 to 1939. Later, as Labour Minister of the Bombay Government from 1946 to 1950. He was a Member of the National Planning Committee. He was largely instrumental in organising the Indian National Trade Union Congress and later became its President.

In 1947, he went to Geneva as a Government delegate to the International Labour Conference. He worked on the 'The Freedom of Association Committee' appointed by the Conference and visited Sweden, France, Switzerland, Belgium and England to study labour and housing conditions in those countries.

In March 1950, he joined the Planning Commission as its Vice-Chairman. In September the following year, he was appointed Planning Minister in the Union Government. In addition, he was also given charge of the portfolios of Irrigation and Power. He was elected to the House of the People from Bombay in the general elections of 1952 and was re-appointed Minister for Planning Irrigation and Power.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957 and was appointed Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Planning and, later, as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in the 1962 from Sabarkantha Constituency in Gujarat. He initiated the Congress Forum for Socialist Action in 1962. He was Union Minister for Labour and Employment in 1962 and 1963 and Minister for Home Affairs from 1963 to 1966. Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, he was a sworn in as acting Prime Minister of India on May 27, 1964. Again on January 11, 1966, he was sworn in as acting Prime Minister following the death of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was a follower of Gandhi's principles and he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Zakir Hussain , was the third President of India from May 13, 1967 until his death on 3 May 1969. He was born at Hyderabad on February 8, 1897, he came of a Pathan family of the upper middle-class, settled at Qaunganj in the District of Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Fida Hussain Khan, went to Hyderabad, studied Law and had a most successful career.Unfortunately, he died when Dr. Zakir Hussain was only ten years old. He was educated at Islamia High School in Etawah (U.P.) and at the Anglo-Muhammadan Oriental College, where he was a prominent student leader. He went to the University of Berlin in Germany for higher studies in 1923, returning with a doctorate in Economics three years later. He rejoined the Jamia Millia in February-March, 1926 and became the Shaikhu Jamia (Vice-Chancellor). He was the President of Hindustani Talimi Sangh, Sevagram from 1938 to 1948.

In November 1948, Dr. Zakir Hussain was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University. He was also nominated a member of the Indian Universities Commission. The World University Service made him the Chairman of the Indian National Committee and in 1954 he was elected the World President of the organization. He was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha and made the Indian representative on the Executive Board of the UNESCO from 1956 to 1958. He remained the Chairman, Central Board of Secondary Education, till 1957, a member of the University Grants Commission till 1957, a member of the University Education Commission in 1948-1949 and of the Educational Reorganisation Committee of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. In 1957 he was appointed the Governor of Bihar. After serving as the Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962, and as the Vice President of India from 1962 to 1967, Hussain was elected President of India on May 13, 1967. In his inaugural speech he said that the whole of India was his home and all its people were his family. Dr. Zakir Hussain was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1954 and Bharat Ratna in 1963. He is the first Indian President to die in office on the 3rd day of May, 1969.

Vinoba Bhave (1895-1982) was an Indian religious figure often called Acharya and the spiritual successor of Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in a Brahmin family on September 11, 1895 at the village of Gagoda in Kolaba district of Maharashtra. He was founder of the Bhoodan Movement. At Gandhi's request Bhave resisted British wartime regulations in 1940 and spent nearly five years in prison. After Gandhi died (1948), Bhave was widely accepted as his successor. More interested in land reform, accomplished voluntarily, than in politics, he founded in 1951 the Bhoodan Movement, or land-gift movement, and subsequently traveled thousands of miles by foot, accepting donations of land for redistribution to the landless. By 1969 the Bhoodan had collected over 4 million acres of land for redistribution. His writings include The Principles and Philosophy of Bhoodan Yajna , Talks on the Gita , and The Steadfast Wisdom . He died on November 15 1982.

Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru (1875–1949) was an Indian lawyer, political and social leader in India during the British Raj.Tej Bahadur Sapru was born on December 8th, 1875 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He was born in a Kashmiri Brahmin family living in Delhi. He was educated at the Agra College, He attended high school in Aligarh and matriculated at Agra College, where he took his law degree. Sapru worked in the Allahabad High Court as a lawyer in 1898. He was knighted in 1922.

Sapru served in the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh) Legislative Council (1913–16), the Imperial Legislative Council (1916–20), and was law member of the Viceroy's Council (1920–23). He was very active in the Indian Round Table Conferences 1931-1933 (see Muldoon) and served as an informal spokesman for liberal views in the first of these which was boycotted by Congress. He was also a member of the Privy council in 1934.He died on January 20, 1949 in Allahabad.

Sir Surendranath Banerjee (1848 – 1925) was one of the earliest Indian political leaders during the British Raj and one of the founders of modern India. One of the first Indians to join the Indian civil service, he was dismissed (1874) for a minor error and was considered by many to be the victim of discrimination. He became a teacher in Calcutta and editor of the nationalist paper Bengalee, and in 1876 he founded the Indian Association, a predecessor of the Indian National Congress. He served twice (1895, 1902) as president of the latter organization but withdrew in 1918 to espouse a more moderate nationalism that called for Hindu-Muslim cooperation and gradual reform. Knighted in 1921, he served (1921–24) as minister for local self-government in Bengal. He was a founder of Ripon College in Calcutta, which in 1947 was renamed Surendranath College. Banerjee died in 1925. He is remembered and widely respected today as a pioneer leader of Indian politics.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose occupies a unique position in the history of India’s struggle for independence. Though a member of the Congress Bose took a different path in his struggle for Indian independence.

Subhas Chandra Bose, (1897 – 1945), Indian nationalist also known as Netaji, was one of the most prominent and highly respected leaders of the Indian Independence Movement. Subhas Chandra Bose was born in 1897 into a wealthy family in Cuttack, Orissa. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a public prosecutor who believed in orthodox nationalism, and later became a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. After completing his studies in India, he went ot England to appear for the Indian Civil Services Examination. He cleared the examination and returned to India. But because of his patriotism, he gave up the ICS and joined the struggle for freedom. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose occupies a unique position in the history of India’s struggle for independence. Though a member of the Congress Bose took a different path in his struggle for Indian independence.

He began his political career in Calcutta and soon became the leader of the left wing of the Indian National Congress. Bose was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1938–39 but resigned from the post following ideological conflicts with Mahatma Gandhi. Bose believed that Mahatma Gandhi's tactics of non-violence would never be sufficient to secure India's independence, and advocated violent resistance. He established a separate political party, the All India Forward Bloc and continued to call for the full and immediate independence of India from British rule. He was imprisoned by the British authorities eleven times. He escaped (1941) and fled to Germany. In 1943 he headed in Singapore a Japanese-sponsored “provisional government of India” and organized an “Indian national army.” Although sympathetic to totalitarianism, his collaboration was principally directed toward freeing India from British rule and the establishment of an independent regime. He is believed to have died on 18 August 1945 in a plane crash over Taiwan. However, contradictory evidence exists regarding his death in the accident.
