Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) Indian philosopher and statesman. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). His birthday is celebrated in India as Teacher's Day. Radhakrishnan was born near Madras into a Brahmin family of orthodox Hindu persuasion. His mother tongue was Telugu. His early years were spent in Tiruttani, Tiruvallur and Tirupati. His primary education was in Gowdie School, Tiruvallur, and higher school education in P.M.High School, Gajulamandyam, Renigunta. He married Sivakamuamma in 1904 at age 16 in Vellore. He graduated with a Master's degree in Philosophy from the prestigious Madras Christian College.

The main part of his life was spent as an academic, he was a philosophy professor at Mysore (1918–21) and Calcutta (1921–31, 1937–41) universities and also held a professorship in eastern religion and ethics at Oxford (1936–52). His positions in academic administration included the vice chancellorship of Andhra Univ. (1931–36) and of Benares Hindu Univ. (1939–48) and the chancellorship of Delhi Univ. (1953–62). He was ambassador to the USSR (1949–52).

Inder Kumar Gujral was born at Jhelum (now in Pakistan) on 4th December 1919. Gujral was born into a respectable Punjabi Khatri family.He is M.A., B.Com. Ph.D. & D.Litt. (Hons. Causa). Gujral and Smt. Shiela Gujral were married on May 26, 1945. He sworn in as the 12th Prime Minister of India on Monday, the 21st of April, 1997.

Inder Kumar Gujral belongs to a family of freedom fighters both his parents participated in the freedom struggle in Punjab. He actively took part in India's freedom struggle, and was jailed in 1942 during 'Quit India Movement'.

Gujral was the Minister of External Affairs from June 1, 1996 and held additional charge of the Ministry of Water Resources from June 28, 1996. He was the Minister of External Affairs earlier during 1989-1990.

He was Ambassador of India to U.S.S.R. (Cabinet Rank) from 1976-1980. He was the Minister of Communications & Parliamentary Affairs; Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Communications; Minister of Works & Housing; Minister of information & Broadcasting; Minister of Planning.

Gujral left the Congress Party in the mid-1980s and joined the Janata Dal. The Dal was a third-party with mainly socialist leanings and regional bases. In 1989 elections, Gujral was elected from Jallandhar parliamentary constituency of Punjab. He served as Minister of External Affairs in V.P.Singh cabinet.

In 1992,Gujral was elected to Rajya Sabha and remained a key Janata Dal leader. After 1996 elections, when United Front government was formed at the center under the leadership of H.D.Deve Gowda, he was again named Minister of External Affairs of India. But when the Congress Party objected and threatened to withdraw its vote of support to the UF, the UF elected I.K. Gujral to Lead the Government. His tenure ended just after 10 months when the Congress Party again decided to withdraw support to the UF. He retired from active politics in 1999.

Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda born on 18 May 1933 in Haradanahalli, Karnataka. He was the twelfth Prime Minister of the Republic of India (1996–1997) and the 14th chief minister of the state of Karnataka (1994–1996).

After completing his education, he joined the Congress Party in 1953 and remained a member till 1962. Gowda, contested as an Independent candidate and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. The Holenarasipur constituency sent him to the Assembly for three more consecutive terms: the Fourth (1967-71), the Fifth (1972-77), and the Sixth (1978-83) Assemblies. In 1975 he was jailed for 18 months when he opposed Gandhi's state of emergency.

He also became the President of Janta party twice at State level and President of State Janata Dal in 1994. He was elected as the leader of the Janata Dal Legislative Party and on December 11, 1994 he assumed office as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka. He then contested as a candidate from Ramanagar Assembly constituency and won by a thumping majority His leadership of the Third Front (a group of regional parties and Non-Congress and Non-BJP combine) led to his Prime Minister's job. Deve Gowda resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 30 May 1996 to be sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of India.

Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902 – 1987) was the sixth Prime Minister of the Republic of India, serving from 28 July 1979 until 14 January 1980.Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902 to Meer Singh and Netra Kaur at Noorpur village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. After completing graduation in science and masters in arts from Agra he did his LLB and started practicing as a civil lawyer at Ghaziabad.

Charan Singh joined the Indian National Congress in 1929 and took active part in the Freedom Movement. He remained in the party till 1967. He was elected leader of the Sanyukta Vidhayak Dal (SVD) and became the Chief Minister of coalition Government in 1967-68, which lasted less than a year. He became the Chief Minister of another coalition government of Uttar Pradesh in 1970, once again for a brief spell of 6 months.

He was elected to the 6th Lok Sabha in 1977 and was the Home Minister in Morarji’s cabinet. In 1979 Charan Singh took over as the Prime Minister of India for less than a month. He passed away on May 29, 1987.

Morarji Ranchhodji Desai (1896 – 1995) was an Indian freedom fighter and 5th Prime Minister of India.He was the first Prime Minister that did not belong to the Indian Congress Party. He is the only Indian to receive the highest civilian awards from both India and Pakistan, namely the Bharat Ratna and Nishaan-e-Pakistan.

Shri Morarji Desai was born on February 29, 1896 in Bhadeli village, now in the Bulsar district of Gujarat. Desai was educated at Wilson College, Bombay where he obtained a B.Sc. in 1916. In 1918 he qualified for the Bombay Civil Service. He resigned from the civil service in 1930. He joined Mohandas K. Gandhi's struggle in 1930 and spent almost 10 years in British jails in the 1930s and 40s.

In 1969 he became chairman of the opposition to Indira Gandhi. He was arrested and detained on June 26, 1975, when Emergency was declared. He was kept in solitary confinement and was released on January 18, 1977, a little before the decision to hold elections to the Lok Sabha was announced. He campaigned vigorously throughout the length and breadth of the country and was largely instrumental in achieving the re-sounding victory of the Janata Party in the General Elections held in March, 1977 for the Sixth Lok Sabha. Shri Desai was himself selected to the Lok Sabha from the Surat Constituency in Gujarat. He was later unanimously elected as Leader of the Janata Party in Parliament and was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India on March 24, 1977.

Gulzari Lal Nanda was born on July 4, 1898, in Sialkot (Punjab) was an Indian politician. He was educated at Lahore, Agra and Allahabad. He worked as a research scholar on labour problems at the University of Allahabad (1920-1921) and became Professor of Economics at the National College, Bombay in 1921. He joined the Non-Cooperation Movement the same year. In 1922, he become Secretary of the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association in which he worked until 1946. He was imprisoned for Satyagraha in 1932, and again from 1942 to 1944. He was elected to the Bombay Legislative Assembly in 1937 and was Parliamentary Secretary (Labour and Excise) to the Government of Bombay from 1937 to 1939. Later, as Labour Minister of the Bombay Government from 1946 to 1950. He was a Member of the National Planning Committee. He was largely instrumental in organising the Indian National Trade Union Congress and later became its President.

In 1947, he went to Geneva as a Government delegate to the International Labour Conference. He worked on the 'The Freedom of Association Committee' appointed by the Conference and visited Sweden, France, Switzerland, Belgium and England to study labour and housing conditions in those countries.

In March 1950, he joined the Planning Commission as its Vice-Chairman. In September the following year, he was appointed Planning Minister in the Union Government. In addition, he was also given charge of the portfolios of Irrigation and Power. He was elected to the House of the People from Bombay in the general elections of 1952 and was re-appointed Minister for Planning Irrigation and Power.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1957 and was appointed Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Planning and, later, as Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in the 1962 from Sabarkantha Constituency in Gujarat. He initiated the Congress Forum for Socialist Action in 1962. He was Union Minister for Labour and Employment in 1962 and 1963 and Minister for Home Affairs from 1963 to 1966. Following the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, he was a sworn in as acting Prime Minister of India on May 27, 1964. Again on January 11, 1966, he was sworn in as acting Prime Minister following the death of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was a follower of Gandhi's principles and he was awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Purushottam Das Tandon was one of the famous personalities of the Indian National Congress. He was a strong supporter of Hindi as a national language. He was deeply religious and followed the Hindu Ideals. He was born at Allahabad on 1 August 1882. He graduated from the Muir Central College, Allahabad in 1904, subsequently qualifying for a degree in Law and a Master's Degree in History. He entered the legal profession in 1906 and joined the Bar of the Allahabad High Court in 1908.He joined the Indian National Congress in 1899 while a student and represented Allahabad at the All India Congress Committee in 1906. He had been imprisoned in 1921 for active participation in the Non-cooperation Movement. During his active participation in the freedom struggle, he was arrested several times. His contribution was especially notable in the field of organising Kisan Sabhas to secure the cooperation of the peasantry to the cause of India's independence. He worked for long years as the speaker of the Legislative assembly of U.P. He was also elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, to the Lok Sabha in 1952 and to the Rajya Sabha in 1956. He was also intimately associated with many institutions like the Servants of the People Society, the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan and the Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti. He devoted major part of his energies to the propagation of Hindi and for the development of literature. Shri Tandon was fondly called 'Rajarshi' by Mahatma Gandhi. In 1961, the title of 'Bharat Ratna' was conferred upon him. He died on 1 July 1962.

Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861-1946) was an Indian politician. Malaviya was born to an orthodox Hindu family at Allahabad on December 25 1861. Among Malaviyaji's many achievements, the most monumental was the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University or Kashi Hindu Vishvidyalaya. In 1928 he joined Lala Lajpat Rai, Jawaharlal Nehru and many others in protesting against the Simon Commission, which had been set up by the British to consider India's future.With Mahatma Gandhi he represented India at the First Round Table Conference in 1931.Malaviya popularised the famous slogan "Satyameva Jayate" (Truth alone will win). He was a great educationist and a follower of The Bhagavad Gita - A great Karmayogi.He worked for the demolition of cast barrier in temples and other social barriers. He died on 12 November 1946.
