Top Heart Attack Fighters - Walnuts


Walnuts are rich in Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) that protect the heart walls and blood vessels from free radical damage. It is advisable to eat a couple of walnuts every day, or incorporate them in recipes such as the one for Walnut Balls that follows.

Walnut Balls

2 tbsp walnuts, toasted
1/2 cup black seedless dates
1/4 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder

1.  Knead the dates into smooth dough.
2. Add the walnuts and cardamom powder and mix well.
3. Divide the mixture into 8 portions and shape into balls. Serve at room temperature.

Dr.Manmohan Singh is the fourteenth Prime Minister of India. He was born on 26 September 1932, Gah, West Punjab (now in Pakistan). He is the first Sikh Indian prime minister, Singh was sworn in on May 22, 2004. Manmohan Singh is considered one of the most qualified and influential figures in India's recent history, mainly because of the economic reforms he had initiated in 1991 when he was Finance Minister under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao.

His economics education included an undergraduate (1952) and a master's degree (1954) from Punjab University; an undergraduate degree (1957) from Cambridge university (St. John's College); and a doctorate (1962) from Oxford university (Nuffield College).

He was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 2002. The University of Oxford awarded him an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree in June 2005, and in October 2006, the University of Cambridge followed with the same honour. Singh married Gursharan Kaur in 1958, and they have three daughters.

He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from Assam since 1991 and the upper house leader of the opposition from 1998 - 2004 when India was governed by Bharatiya Janata Party.

Inder Kumar Gujral was born at Jhelum (now in Pakistan) on 4th December 1919. Gujral was born into a respectable Punjabi Khatri family.He is M.A., B.Com. Ph.D. & D.Litt. (Hons. Causa). Gujral and Smt. Shiela Gujral were married on May 26, 1945. He sworn in as the 12th Prime Minister of India on Monday, the 21st of April, 1997.

Inder Kumar Gujral belongs to a family of freedom fighters both his parents participated in the freedom struggle in Punjab. He actively took part in India's freedom struggle, and was jailed in 1942 during 'Quit India Movement'.

Gujral was the Minister of External Affairs from June 1, 1996 and held additional charge of the Ministry of Water Resources from June 28, 1996. He was the Minister of External Affairs earlier during 1989-1990.

He was Ambassador of India to U.S.S.R. (Cabinet Rank) from 1976-1980. He was the Minister of Communications & Parliamentary Affairs; Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Communications; Minister of Works & Housing; Minister of information & Broadcasting; Minister of Planning.

Gujral left the Congress Party in the mid-1980s and joined the Janata Dal. The Dal was a third-party with mainly socialist leanings and regional bases. In 1989 elections, Gujral was elected from Jallandhar parliamentary constituency of Punjab. He served as Minister of External Affairs in V.P.Singh cabinet.

In 1992,Gujral was elected to Rajya Sabha and remained a key Janata Dal leader. After 1996 elections, when United Front government was formed at the center under the leadership of H.D.Deve Gowda, he was again named Minister of External Affairs of India. But when the Congress Party objected and threatened to withdraw its vote of support to the UF, the UF elected I.K. Gujral to Lead the Government. His tenure ended just after 10 months when the Congress Party again decided to withdraw support to the UF. He retired from active politics in 1999.

Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda born on 18 May 1933 in Haradanahalli, Karnataka. He was the twelfth Prime Minister of the Republic of India (1996–1997) and the 14th chief minister of the state of Karnataka (1994–1996).

After completing his education, he joined the Congress Party in 1953 and remained a member till 1962. Gowda, contested as an Independent candidate and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. The Holenarasipur constituency sent him to the Assembly for three more consecutive terms: the Fourth (1967-71), the Fifth (1972-77), and the Sixth (1978-83) Assemblies. In 1975 he was jailed for 18 months when he opposed Gandhi's state of emergency.

He also became the President of Janta party twice at State level and President of State Janata Dal in 1994. He was elected as the leader of the Janata Dal Legislative Party and on December 11, 1994 he assumed office as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka. He then contested as a candidate from Ramanagar Assembly constituency and won by a thumping majority His leadership of the Third Front (a group of regional parties and Non-Congress and Non-BJP combine) led to his Prime Minister's job. Deve Gowda resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 30 May 1996 to be sworn in as the 11th Prime Minister of India.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee born on December 25, 1924 at Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. He was the Prime Minister of India from May 16 - May 31, 1996 and a second time from March 19, 1998 to May 13, 2004. He has been taking a keen interest in international affairs, upliftment of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, women and child welfare. Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao was born on June 28, 1921 at Vangara village, Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh. He studied in Osmania University, Hyderabad, Bombay university and the Nagpur university. He was able to speak in 17 languages. He was an advocate an active freedom fighter during the Indian Independence movement and joined full time politics after independence as a member of the Indian National Congress.

He was the Minister of Law and Information, 1962-64; Law and Endowments, 1964-67; Health and Medicine, 1967 and Education, 1968-71, Government of Andhra Pradesh. He was the Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh, 1971-73; General Secretary, All India Congress Committee, 1975-76; Chairman, Telugu Academy, Andhra Pradesh, 1968-74; Vice-President, Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras, from 1972. He was also Member, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, 1957-77; Member, Lok Sabha 1977-84. He was Minister for External Affairs from January 14, 1980 to July 18, 1984; Minister of Home Affairs from July 19, 1984 to December 31, 1984 and the Minister of Defence from December 31, 1984 to September 25, 1985. He then assumed charge as Minister of Human Resource Development on September 25, 1985.

After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and the general elections of 1991 , Rao was chosen to lead the Congress party and after Congress won in parliament later that year he became Prime Minister. He was the first person outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to serve as Prime Minister for five continuous years. He was also the first Prime Minister to Lead a minority government for a full term . His government survived a "no-confidence" vote in Parliament in 1994. When general elections were held in May, Rao and Congress were defeated, and he lost the prime ministership. He retained leadership of the Congress party until late 1996 . After his retirement from national politics Rao published a novel named The Insider . The controversial book, which follows the career of a person as he rises through the ranks of Indian politics, resembled events from Rao's own life. Rao, however, denied any connection. Rao suffered a heart attack on 9 December 2004, and was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences where he died 14 days later at the age of 83.

Chandra Shekhar Singh was born on July 1, 1927 in village Ibrahimpatti in District Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Shri Chandra Sekhar is married to Smt. Duja Devi. Chandra Shekar did his Master of Arts (MA) at Allahabad University. After graduation, he became active in socialist politics. He joined the Socialist Movement. He was closely associated with Acharya Narendra Dev. He was elected Secretary of the District Praja Socialist Party, Ballia. Within a year, he was elected Joint Secretary of the U.P. State Praja Socialist Party. In 1955-56 he took over as General Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh, state Praja Socialist Party.

From 1962 to 1967, Shekhar belonged to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper house of the Parliament of India. He had a nationwide padayatra in 1984 to know the country better as he claimed which gave the jitters to Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister.He was called a 'Young Turk".

He has been a Member of Parliament since 1962 except for a brief period from 1984 to 1989. In 1989 he successfully contested both from his home constituency, Ballia, and the adjoining Maharajganj constituency in Bihar. He vacated the latter. He was President of the Janata Party from 1977 to 1988.

He was Prime Minister for only seven months from 10 November 1990 to 21 June 1991. He resigned after the Congress Party withdrew support to him. He remained in office until national elections could be held later that year. He was honoured with the inaugural Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1995.

Ganesh Vasudev Mavlankar was an Indian freedom fighter and the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India. In 1952, after the first general elections in independent India, G.V. Mavalankar was elected the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He died in office in 1956.
