Monuments In India - Ellora Caves
The Ellora caves are found in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. There are 34 rock-cut cave temples built by the Chalukyas between 3rd and 9th centuries. 12 are of Buddhist, 17 Hindu and 5 jain temples. All the caves face west and so the interior can be seen clearly in the afternoon. Kailasanath themple is the most spectacular structure among the temples. It is a monolith of 50 m. long and 29 m. high, carved out from a single rock. Built by king krishna of Aurangabad during the 8th century, the temple appears as through rising from a wide courtyard at ground level. Images of River Goddesses Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswathi are carved on the Abhishektheertha temple. Indra Sabha and Jagannath Sabha has been illustrated on the Jaina temples. The magnificent statue of an elephant, the dhawajasthambha, is an outstanding feature. The Ellora caves are examples of architectual and sculptural wonders.
