Monuments In India - Somnath Temple
Somanath was a pilgrim city in Gujarat. The Chalukyas who ruled at that time built a Siva temple. It is believed that this temple was first built in gold by a king Raja Soman before 11th century. Later another king krishnaraja made the maintenance in silver. After the attack of Mehmood Gazni, Somnath temple was rebuilt in black granite. Again in 13th century this temple had been attacked and rebuilt later. Today Somanath temple stands as a brilliant example of wooden pillars beautifully carved and decorated with precious gems. The 13-storeyed magnificient tower is crowned with 14 golden domes. The Somanath temple is one of the main attractions for tourists.
